Bloody Mary

New Yorkers, did you know this?  Apparently Mayor Bloomberg deemed October 5th Bloody Mary Day in NYC, so says the New York Times

Why Oct. 5 and why now? Because the Bloody Mary celebrates its 75th birthday this month. Its alleged creator — Fernand Petiot, known as Pete — mixed the spicy, tomato-based cocktail in New York City in the fall of 1934.

Throughout this month, 20 variations on the drink are being offered at its birthplace, the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis hotel, where Petiot worked when he introduced the cocktail to New York.

I only drink Bloody Marys in the summer at Fire Island.  But I guess I should try one of the specialty variations this month.  The Bloody Mary at Little Giant made with pickled beets and beet horseradish vodka sounds…sort of good?

Thanks Lindsey for directing me to this gem.
