I’ve never understood the idea of “passing,” being part black but looking so white that most people wouldn’t be able to tell you weren’t white. Even after I finished The Help this weekend, I had difficulty understanding what such a person would look like. It wasn’t until I came across these photos of Lena Horne on the Vogue Black site that I realized how miniscule the physical differences really are. According to the New York Times, despite her talent and beauty, Lena was never considered seriously for leading roles, unless the films were all-black movies. And she even had to hide her marriage to a prominent, white musical director for three years. We’ve come a long way since then, thankfully.
